Z83 Form — 2026 Official Version

The Z83 is the official application form for all South African government jobs. It is required for every post advertised by every national and provincial department. Without it, your application will not be considered — no matter how qualified you are.

⚠️ Using the wrong version = automatic disqualification

On 1 January 2022, the DPSA made the new Z83 (gazetted 6 November 2020) mandatory for all applications. Any application submitted on an older version is automatically rejected — departments are not allowed to accept it, even if your qualifications are perfect. Download the official version below.

Frequently asked questions

What is the new Z83 form?
The Z83 is the only official application form accepted for all South African national and provincial government job applications. The "new" version was published in the Government Gazette on 6 November 2020 and became the mandatory standard on 1 January 2022. It has 8 sections (A–H plus a Declaration) and was redesigned to simplify the application process. If your form looks different — particularly if it has more sections or different headings — you are using an outdated version that will be rejected automatically.
Where can I download the Z83 form?
The official Z83 form is published by the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) and can be downloaded directly from dpsa.gov.za. You can also use Groco to pre-fill the form automatically with your saved profile information — eliminating the need to type the same details for every application.
Is the 2021, 2022, or 2023 Z83 form still valid?
There is only one valid version: the form gazetted on 6 November 2020, which became mandatory on 1 January 2022. This is the same form used in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 — the DPSA has not issued a new version since then. The version number matters, not the year of your application. Any older form (pre-2020 design) will be automatically disqualified.
Can I fill in the Z83 form online?
Yes. Groco lets you pre-fill the Z83 automatically from your saved profile. You enter your personal details, qualifications, and work history once — and Groco generates a completed, correctly formatted Z83 PDF for any government job with one click. It is free and takes about two minutes to set up.

8 Z83 mistakes that get applications rejected

These are the most common reasons government job applications are disqualified before anyone even reads the CV. Most of them take 30 seconds to fix — if you know about them.

1

Using an outdated version of the form

Only the version gazetted on 6 November 2020 is accepted. If your Z83 looks different — especially if it has more than 8 sections or lacks the "Declaration" wording at the bottom — it will be rejected outright. When in doubt, download fresh from the DPSA link on this page.

2

Not signing Section I (the Declaration)

An unsigned Z83 is automatically disqualified. You must sign and date the Declaration section — this confirms that the information you provided is true and that you understand the conditions of employment. No signature = no consideration.

3

Leaving the Reference Number blank

Every post in the DPSA circular has a unique reference number (e.g. "REFS/015/2026"). This tells the department exactly which post you're applying for. Without it, your application cannot be matched to a vacancy. Copy it exactly as it appears in the circular.

4

Leaving Section E completely blank

Section E covers your qualifications and training. If you have no formal qualifications beyond a specific level, you must still write "N/A" in the relevant rows. A blank section raises a red flag and can lead to rejection for "incomplete application".

5

Writing the wrong date in the closing date field

Many applicants write today's date instead of the post's official closing date. The closing date is shown in the circular next to each vacancy — it is not the date you fill in the form. Use that date exactly.

6

Sending to the wrong email address or physical address

Each department lists its own dedicated application address. Sending your Z83 to a general DPSA inbox or a previous address you used will mean your application is never received. Always use the address shown for that specific post in that specific circular.

7

Attaching certified copies to your initial application

Since DPSA Circular 19 of 2022, applicants submit only uncertified copies (or no copies at all) with their Z83 and CV. You only need to bring certified copies when you are shortlisted and called for an interview. Attaching them upfront does not give you an advantage — and some departments will disqualify applications that include unsolicited attachments.

8

Sending an application after the closing date

Government departments are required by law not to accept late applications. Even one day late is too late. Set a reminder at least three days before the closing date — and never wait until the day itself, as email servers can be delayed.
