The ideal candidate must, at a minimum, be in possession of a recognised Diploma in GISc, Cartography or relevant qualification as recognised by SAQA coupled with 6-year post qualification Technical (GISc) experience, compulsory registration with SAGC as a GISc Technician and a valid driver’s licence. Essential Knowledge, Skills And Competencies Required: The successful candidate must have knowledge of: Geo-database implementation; understanding of GIS applications and spatial data; theory; principles; and practices of GIS; knowledge of GIS standards; GIS software applications; GIS software customisations; basic understanding of technologies such as GPS, Photogrammetry and remote sensing; projections; principles of cartography; problem solving and analysis; decision making skills; team work; analytical skills; creativity skills; self-management; customer service; communication and interpersonal skills; planning; organising and execution; project Management and Computer skills.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will have the following key responsibilities: - Manage, supervise and perform technical GISc activities; Maintain GIS unit Effectiveness; People management; Functional Requirement analysis and Research. The candidate will be responsible for coordinating and implementing KZN COGTA's geospatial programmes and services by managing enterprise GIS platforms, maintaining the Integrated Land Information System (ILIS), developing and supporting geospatial dashboards, coordinating the georeferencing of strategic provincial projects, and providing spatial intelligence to support government planning and decision-making. The role supports key initiatives such as the District Development Model (DDM), Municipal Local Economic Development (MLED), Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Climate Change adaptation, municipal infrastructure and service 120 delivery projects, while also providing GIS support to municipalities through training, advisory services, data management and capacity-building. In addition, the position conducts spatial analysis, produces maps and analytical reports, supports disaster management and resilience planning, coordinates stakeholder engagements and GIS projects, and drives the adoption of innovative geospatial technologies to improve governance, monitoring, reporting and service delivery across the province.
